Diagnostic X-ray and Fluoroscopy Department

Although there are more advanced technologies available, standard x-rays are still important diagnostic tools for doctors. At Radiology Associates of Tallahassee, sophisticated computers process your x-rays into sharp, clear images that are stored electronically. Because we use state-of-the-art equipment, the radiation dose is lower, increasing safety to patients and staff.

Diagnostic x-rays:

X-rays are one of medicine's most important diagnostic tools. X-rays are high-energy particles with the ability to pass through solid objects, such as the human body. As a patient, receiving occasional radiation exposure produces virtually no risk whatsoever as the amount of radiation is not great enough to produce damage to your cells, body tissues or organs.

Contrast radiography:

Contrast radiography is used to study a range of internal structures. To study the esophagus, stomach, and intestines, kidneys and bladder contrast is administered, and the radiologist takes a series of images.

Fluoroscopy:

Fluoroscopy makes a moving x-ray picture of internal organs. A constant stream of x-rays passes through the patient. This casts shadows of internal organs onto a screen. Doctors use this when they need to see internal movement. Fluoroscopic exams are considered to be routine.

Upper GI:

An upper GI is a test utilized by a radiologist to observe the mechanics and internal anatomy of the esophagus, stomach and upper intestine. Amongst other things, this test is useful in detecting conditions such as ulcers, tumors or inflammation. Patients undergoing this test often have complaints of pain, reflux, vomiting or blood in the stool.

Lower GI or barium enema:

A lower GI or barium enema is a test performed to evaluate the colon and the last portion of the small intestine. The test is performed by inserting a small tube into the rectum, followed by a mixture of barium and water. To help barium coat the lining of the colon and produce better images, air may also be administered through the tube. This test is useful in diagnosing polyps, ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease and tumors.
