CT (Computed Tomography)

At Radiology Associates of Tallahassee, we are pleased to offer the full range of diagnostic CT services. CT scans combine specialized x-rays with innovative computers to provide images of anatomy in exquisite detail. Clearer pictures allow your doctor to make an earlier and more precise diagnosis of your condition and response to treatment.

Our multi-detector helical CT scanner is the state-of-the-art. Its computer processor and software can create three-dimensional images of structures, such as blood vessels. Because the scanner can more clearly define complex relationships between internal organs or other parts of your anatomy, a better diagnosis can be made. The cutting-edge design of our CT scanner, which process images faster, makes for a shorter exam time and creates higher quality images.

CT (computed tomography) scan is a specialized test in which a machine passes x-rays through the body at various angles to obtain information which is reconstructed into a picture by a computer. This allows for detailed demonstration of internal anatomy.

A CT is a large square shaped machine. It has a good-sized hole in the middle, much like a doughnut. The patient lies on an associated table, which moves into and out of the hole as x-rays are generated by a rotating gantry. The movements produce clicking and whirring noises.

It may be necessary to have iodinated contrast to better define your anatomy. You may be asked to drink contrast, and/or may require an intravenous injection of contrast. We use only non-ionic contrast media, the safest available. Patients with iodinated contest allergies who need to undergo a CT scan should receive special pre-procedural preparation to reduce the risk of allergic reaction and should be scanned in a hospital setting.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

The MRI scanner is a large magnet which does not use x-ray. MRI translates signals from the patient's body to a computer to produce clear pictures of a specific area.

MRI is best for soft tissue:

  • Brain
  • Nerve sleeves
  • Joints
  • Spinal cord
  • Tendons
  • Discs

MRI machines come in different strengths. MRI strength is measured in units called a "Tesla". 1 Tesla = 20,000 times the earth's gravitational pull.

The higher the MR tesla strength - the more detail, the faster the exam.

The radiologists of Radiology Associates of Tallahassee interpret all the MRI exams done at Tallahassee Diagnostic Imaging. For more information, please visit www.tdic.org
