Computer Aided Detection
We are so pleased that you chose the Women's Imaging Center at Radiology Associates for your mammogram and other breast health care. We are very concerned about your health care and well being. While we strive to provide you with compassionate, state of the art care, we want you to know that there are limitations to mammography.
Studies have shown that despite state of the art equipment and specialty trained radiologists and technologists, up to 20% of breast cancers may not be detected with mammography. This is why we strongly recommend that you follow the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer.
- Monthly breast self exam.
- Yearly clinical breast exams by your healthcare provider.
- Annual screening mammograms for all women over 40 and early diagnostic mammograms if you have a palpable lump.
At the Women's Imaging Center we have an additional weapon in the fight against breast cancer called Computer Aided Detection (CAD). The radiologist provides the first interpretation of your mammogram. Then digitized images of your mammogram are analyzed by a computer that has been specially programmed to look for signs of breast cancer. The radiologist then reevaluates any areas marked by the computer. Occasionally you may be called back for additional views of an area. Please do not panic! Most patients who have additional views taken still have a benign (no suspicious area) report.
Everyone can benefit from this state of the art analysis. Please note that this may not be covered by your insurance carrier. If not, patients can request the additional computer analysis for $25.00.
